History of Northeast, Minneapolis

The area currently known as Nordeast (Or "Northeast Minneapolis") was originally founded as the city of St. Anthony in 1855 , 12 years before the City of Minneapolis. The cities merged in 1872, with both taking the name "Minneapolis." The former St. Anthony became known as the Northeast neighborhood of Minneapolis. At the same time, a small township north of the new city incorporated under the name "St. Anthony Village" - this St. Anthony (which continues to exist today) has no relationship to the original City of St. Anthony.

The name "Northeast" originally came from Minneapolis' street naming system, which assigned the suffixes "Northeast" and "Southeast" to streets east of the Mississippi river. Though not all of old St. Anthony falls in the "Northeast" suffixed area, residents commonly consider all of Old St. Anthony, and even parts of the newer St. Anthony Village, to be parts of "Nordeast Minneapolis."

Northeast Minneapolis has tradionally been home to northern and eastern Eurpean immigrants, earning it the nickname "Nordeast." Traditionally a working class neighborhood, many of the houses are smaller and more closely packed that those in more affluent areas.

Today, many of Nordeast's factories and warehouses have been converted into artist studios and condos.
